El Salon Galeria @ Savannah Cultural Center Reception
Soy como soy: I am who I am.
It’s a simple phrase, strong and almost defiant, self-assured but not arrogant.
It’s also the name of a new Latino artist collective that has begun making its mark throughout the Hostess City of the South. “The idea of the group was to show people for their true characteristics, without a mask on,” said group founder Fermin Uriz.
On Oct. 28, the collective, which is referred to in print as “SOY X SOY,” with the “X” acting as a visual stand-in for "Como”, will have its coming out party with the opening reception of their exhibition “EL SALÓN” at Savannah’s Cultural Arts Center Gallery.
What is Latin art?
Despite labeling themselves as a Latino, Hispanic, or “Native” artists collective (members of the group used all three terms during my conversation with them), don’t expect to see what you might find at an art market in places like Puerto Rico or Columbia at a SOY X SOY exhibition. “EL SALÓN” is meant to be a show of artists who happen to be of Hispanic/Latin descent, not a lesson in Hispanic culture.
“I think there’s a misconception when it comes to Latino art,” explained Boatwright, who, in addition to being an award-winning photographer, also works as Content Editor for La Voz Latina. “I think that people that come to this show think they’re going to come an exhibit of indigenous type of work, art works representative of the lands that we come from. And that’s not it. We are showing art. It’s not a tourist attraction. This is not a souvenir. This is really a study of Latino art on the mainland.
